What is Body Psychology?

Body Psychology (also known as Yoga Therapy)* is a method of using breath and sensations in the physical body to help process and release emotions, trauma, pain and past experiences. Emotions are a physiological experience. “Feelings” happen in the body, not in the mind. When we place our attention on various places of sensation in the body, emotions and unresolved experiences tend to shift, process and metabolize. This technique of dislodging and releasing can be done seated and by simply focusing your attention and breath on sensations in the body in a particular way.

To amplify healing results, the body can be positioned in certain postures (available to all bodies regardless of flexibility, strength, or injury)  that evoke sensations to be processed and released. Specific breathing and attentional strategies are used to enhance the healing effects resulting in more efficient and easeful processing. Not only does this lead to emotional relief and balance, oftentimes people also experience decreased physical pain and more overall mobility and comfort. Making this mind-body connection in an experiential way with my support helps you release old traumas and process life’s experiences as they happen rather than holding them in muscle memory.

Body Psychology helps you shake off what is ready to be released and move into a more comfortable, free and present version of yourself.

Benefits of Body Psychology

  • Increase a general sense of ease and balance
  • Ability to be with difficult moments and emotions with peace and relaxation
  • Disengage from triggering thoughts/experiences and make decisions in line with your values
  • Resolve incomplete emotional experiences
  • Experience clarity of thought through release in the body
  • Release chronic tension and tightness
  • Develop a stronger sense of intuition and wisdom
  • Re-wire mind-body patterns to support overall physical and emotional health
  • Improve posture and range of motion
  • Decrease and relate differently to chronic pain
  • Increase energy, vitality and mental/emotional clarity

"Emotions are a physiological experience. You cannot think through emotions, you must feel them in the body. When you do, you gain a sense of peace, calm, clarity of thought and access to your Wisdom. "

What to expect in a Body Psychology session

After an intake, I will take you through a series of poses designed for your unique body and treatment goals. Body Psychology sessions can be in-person or on-line. You will use props to help support your body into poses that I will demonstrate and verbally guide you through. (No special equipment is needed.) I will teach you specific breathing techniques to support your body’s ability to relax and release. As the session progresses, most people notice shifts or releases in the physical body, mind and/or emotions. When the sequence is complete, I will lead you through Integration, where you are guided to lie back, relax, absorb the effects of your practice and allow any needed insights to arise. Between session practices are assigned as appropriate.

Length, Frequency and Cost

Sessions are typically 75 minutes in length. I combine Body Psychology with other evidence-based psychological treatments. Body Psychology techniques may be used for an entire session or only a few minutes based on your individual treatment goals, progress, and particular needs on that day. All sessions are tailored to specifically address your individuality and forward movement as well as your treatment preferences.

Frequency of sessions and length of treatment are unique for each client. In general, it is useful to schedule more frequent meetings at the beginning, tapering to less frequent appointments as you progress toward your goals. Many of my clients graduate from treatment and then opt to schedule a booster session as needed. More frequent sessions may be scheduled when you are approaching a big life event (personal or professional) and would like the benefits of navigating and processing through it with ease.

Send a message to introduce yourself and request an appointment or more information.

Cost: $850/75 minute session or a 10-session package for $8,000.
